Brigadier Heinz Krieb
Director of the "Concepts and Capabilities" Directorate
European Union Military Staff
Promoted to the rank of Brigade General in August 2014, Brigade General Krieb has been leading the Concepts and Capabilities Directorate of the European External Action Service’s European Union Military Staff since September of that year.
Previously, he was appointed as Branch Chief for EU politico-military affairs at the staff of Germany’s Permanent Military Representative to the European Union/NATO Military Committee. Before he was the advisor of the Chief of Defence Staff (April 2009—Nov. 2012); a student of politico-military affairs, international relations and security policy at the NATO Defence College (June 2008—April 2009); Branch Chief (December 2004—January 2007) and later Assistant Chief of Division (January 2007—June 2008) responsible for operational planning, German operational commitments and national politico-military affairs within the Armed Forces Staff of the Germany Ministry of Defence; Commanding Officer of ISAF’s Kunduz Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT Kunduz), responsible for peace support and stabilization operations (September to November 2004); G3 Officer and Chief of the G3 Division of the German Army Training and Doctrine Command (November 2002 to September 2004); after promotion to the rank of colonel in April 2002, Assistant Chief of Staff G3 of the Multinational Division (Central) responsible for operational planning (April to October 2002); Assistant Branch Chief responsible for operational planning, German operational commitments, co-operation for joint exercises and crisis management procedures within NATO, EU and the WEU (November 1998 to November 2002); Commanding Officer of the 413th armoured battalion (November 1996 to November 1998); G3 Staff Officer within the Policy Branch of HQ AFCENT (November 1993 to November 1998); G3 and G4 Staff Officer (responsible for operational planning and logistics) within the 14th armoured brigade (October 1990 to November 1993); a student of the German Army’s Command and General Staff College (Oct. 1998 to Oct. 1990); and recruit, cadet officer, Platoon Leader and Company Commander (from 1975 to 1988). He graduated in Educational Science from the University of Federal Armed Forces in 1981.
Born in Allendorf, Germany, on the 13th of December 1956, Brigade General Krieb is married with two children and speaks English, French and German.
